On a short break you need to be enjoying the experience as soon as possible. Often travelling can be a little stressful. Not so on the Venice-Simplon Orient Express. We left Victoria Station, London almost spot on time, each clutching a glass of chilled champagne. The 2 hour trip to Folkestone was made in plush armchairs and seemed to take no time at all. Whilst we worked our way slowly through a meal Cream of Butternut soup, Guinea Fowl and Meringue with Fresh Berries despite our best efforts we couldn't get to the bottom of our wine glasses. Crossing the channel on the Sea Cat was accompanied by more alcohol and a short while later we transferred to the Continental train which took us to Paris. We were guided to a plush compartment complete with washbasin, coathangers and electric fans! The bar carriage was a new experience. How they got that baby grand through those little doors I don't know but we topped our alcohol levels and soaked up the atmosphere whilst we listened to the music. Returning to our compartment we rested preparing for the 4 courses still to come. "If you get the chance - do it!"
